CodeWeavers CrossOver 22 for macOS Linux and ChromeOS has been released

Hi folks,

I’m thrilled to announce CodeWeavers has released CrossOver 22 for macOS, Linux and ChromeOS!

The hallmark of this release is a complete redesign of the CrossOver user interface for macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. These changes were designed with two goals in mind: both to make CrossOver more intuitive to use and to offer a more modern look and feel. We are grateful to our BetterTesters who responded to our survey and participated in our usability studies: your feedback was invaluable!

CrossOver 22 includes an update to Wine 7.7, bringing with it over 10,000 changes that offer improvements to a variety of applications. This release also includes an update to Wine Mono 7.2.0 and vkd3d 1.4.

On the macOS side, we have been continuing to make gaming performance improvements. Between including the wined3d changes available with Wine 7.7, updating to MoltenVK version 1.1.10 and adding a few other tweaks, we’ve made quite a bit of progress. One particularly exciting example is Rocket League: the performance using wined3d is much better than CrossOver 21.2, and the nameplates are visible in-game (unlike using DXVK). Our initial tests show that CrossOver 22 runs pretty well on the macOS Ventura beta. Please note that we cannot offer official support for Ventura until it is released due to the possibility of changes during beta causing problems for CrossOver support. After Ventura is released, we will post an update on our website, so make sure you are subscribed to our blog to get the latest updates on Ventura compatibility.

CrossOver 22 also offers initial support for DirectX 12 games on Linux. A handful of DirectX 12 games are running well, including Diablo II Resurrected. We also have a few fixes to Office 2016/365 bugs for our Linux and ChromeOS users.

If you use CrossOver to play GTA Online, please see this forum post with information about potential bans from Rockstar Games.

CodeWeavers CrossOver 21.2 for Linux Mac and Chrome OS

I’m thrilled to announce that we have released CrossOver 21.2 for macOS, Linux and Chrome OS!

This new release offers both improvements from upstream Wine and important fixes for a variety of issues.

CrossOver 21.2 includes over 300 updates to wined3d from upstream Wine. We also included dozens of changes from Wine 6.0.1 and 6.0.2 and updated to Wine Mono 7.0.

Audio now works on both Mac and Linux for Halo: Master Chief Collection. We also fixed an issue with a recent Steam update that was causing some connections to take a very long time.

On macOS, we fixed a long-standing issue with mouse control in Unity games. We also included fixes for the latest Rockstar Games Launcher and Quicken updates that caused those applications to stop working on M1 machines.

For our Linux and Chrome OS users, we fixed rendering issues on Office 365. We also made changes so that CrossOver once again seamlessly installs on Chrome OS, and we added a fix for libldap dependency errors on certain Linux distros (including Ubuntu 21.10).

CodeWeavers CrossOver 21.1 for Linux Mac and Chrome OS

I’m thrilled to announce that we have released CrossOver 21.1 for macOS, Linux and Chrome OS!

In addition to a suite of fixes for a variety of applications, CrossOver 21.1 also includes some pretty cool enhancements. We’re very excited about them, and we hope you will be too.

Our big reveal for this release is much-awaited support for Grand Theft Auto V (including GTA Online) on both macOS and Linux. Starting with CrossOver 21.1, you can now run Grand Theft Auto V via either the standalone Rockstar Games Launcher or Steam.

This release is also the first to offer official support for the newly released macOS Monterey. We also added support for several games that previously did not run on macOS and fixed an issue for certain launchers that were not working on macOS with CrossOver 21 (including MicroTik The Dude).

For our Linux users, we restored support for Outlook 2016/365.

On Chrome OS, resolving dependency issues should be much smoother with this release.

CrossOver 21.1 includes several other fixes, including ones for the recent updates to Ubisoft Connect and Quicken that caused problems running them in CrossOver. Additionally, this release includes improvements to wined3d and an update to Wine Mono 6.3.

CodeWeavers CrossOver for Android and Chromebooks beta to soon be released

James Ramey the president of CodeWeavers posted on his personal Facebook account earlier that a beta version of CrossOver Android could be released as soon as Monday August 1st 2016. CodeWeavers has been working on their Android and now Chromebook version of CrossOver for over a year now. The long wait is about over folks, if you ever dreamed of running Microsoft Windows Games or productivity application on your Android device it will soon be possible.

James also posted earlier in the week on his blog about CrossOver running on Android.

Sometimes, you find yourself staring at something you could never have imagined being possible based on its humble beginnings. The Wright Brothers pilot the airplane for 12 seconds; then, Neil Armstrong lands on the moon. The first microcomputer kit is made available in 1975; then, 120 million computers are sold in the world so far THIS YEAR! The Patterson–Gimlin video captures Big Foot on film in 1967; then, Big Foot stars in a series of beef jerky commercials. No one could ever have predicted that these initial events would lead into much bigger and better things. …

In 1996, CodeWeavers was started with the single goal of making Windows based applications run on Linux computers. It was the simple, honest, and noble goal of our founder, Jeremy White. In 1996, the technology pundits were convinced that Linux was set to take over the world. The only outstanding obstacle for the Linux platform was running Microsoft Office software. Hence, CrossOver was born (maybe more or less hatched). In 1996, there were no smart phones, no tablets, no Android, no Google, no Pokémon Go. There was no indication that computers would be more mobile, more connected, or more compact. And yet, here we are today.

So where is ‘here’, you ask? TODAY, Google released Android for Intel based ChromeBooks. AND CrossOver for Android installed and ran on a Google ChromeBook. More importantly, we were able to install the Steam Client into CrossOver for Android and run LIMBO and other games. MORE IMPORTANTLY, we have DirectX 9 support, keyboard support, mouse support, and sound support TODAY!!! PEOPLE, we are staring at a Leprechaun riding on the back of a Unicorn while taking a picture of a UFO. We are running CrossOver through Android on a ChromeBook running a Windows based game launched from the Steam client. THIS HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE…EVER!!!

There will be more testing. There will inevitably be some cleanup work to do. There will be . BUT… CrossOver for Android is working and real and supporting the Steam Client and able to launch games and is actually playable. From our most humble beginnings, I don’t think anyone, Jeremy White included, ever dreamed that CrossOver would be able to run on ChromeBooks. And yet, here we are with people flying planes, people landing on the moon, and Big Foot. I’d say that’s pretty rare company for a small software developer from Minnesota.

Microsoft Office 2013 on Linux with CodeWeavers CrossOver

Microsoft Office 2013 (code named Office 15) is a version of Microsoft Office, a productivity suite for Microsoft Windows. It is the successor to Microsoft Office 2010 and the predecessor to Microsoft Office 2016. It includes extended file format support, user interface updates and support for touch among its new features. Office 2013 is suitable for IA-32 and x64 systems and requires Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or a later version of either. A version of Office 2013 comes included on Windows RT devices. Mainstream support ends on April 10, 2018. Extended support ends on April 11, 2023.

Development on this version of Microsoft Office was started in 2010 and ended on October 11, 2012, when Microsoft Office 2013 was released to manufacturing. Microsoft released Office 2013 to general availability on January 29, 2013. This version includes new features such as integration support for online services (including OneDrive, Outlook.com, Skype, Yammer and Flickr), improved format support for Office Open XML (OOXML), OpenDocument (ODF) and Portable Document Format (PDF) and support for multi-touch interfaces.

Microsoft Office 2013 comes in twelve different editions, including three editions for retail outlets, two editions for volume licensing channel, five subscription-based editions available through Microsoft Office 365 program, the web application edition known as Office Web Apps and the Office RT edition made for tablets and mobile devices. Office Web Apps are available free of charge on the web although enterprises may obtain on-premises installations for a price. Microsoft Office applications may be obtained individually; this includes Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Project and Microsoft SharePoint Designer which are not included in any of the twelve editions.

In the upcoming release of CodeWeavers CrossOver Linux 15 we will see many new and exciting changes over the current CrossOver 14 edition that's available now. Don't get me wrong CrossOver 14 is a nice release and runs many productivity applications and games that we care about today.

CrossOver Linux 15 is a whole new ball game, it will come with Microsoft Office 2013 functionality, the beginnings of DirectX 10 and 11 support, a newly refreshed and modern Graphical User Interface (GUI) and incorporate just over a full years worth of Wine from WineHQ changes into the release. And most likely will ship with the upcoming Wine 1.8 stable release or a variant of that release.

Not only will we get a newly updated Graphical User Interface (GUI) we will also get a totally new version of Wine with many DirectX 10 and 11 enhancements. So the day of playing DirectX 10 and 11 games on Linux is soon approaching. I can only imagine the effects on work productivity as we will be like children in a candy store once again.

So on to the main article, this isn't a how-to or user guide but simply a news post. CrossOver 15 is still under extremely heavy development and testing. This news post is to inform everyone of a small sample of whats soon coming our way.

Distro : Ubuntu Linux 14.04.3 LTS

Running CrossOver 14 Linux For An Easier Wine Experience

For a large portion of Linux and Mac users the reality is there will be some Windows program that they will still have to use on a daily or near-daily basis. For many the answer is Wine, letting them use their applications with a variable amount of success on their new *nix system. Unfortunately Wine doesn't come with any guarantee of support for a given application, nor is there any level of support from the developers beyond the community, or a generous developer. Enter CrossOver.

https://www.codeweavers.com/store2/?dealcode=weaveme

CrossOver has been the main financial support behind the Wine project for several years now, they offer a customized version of the Wine codebase and even claim explicit support for a variety of applications-- some games, some productivity software, some utilities.

https://www.codeweavers.com/store2/?dealcode=weaveme

For many users Wine meets all of their needs, free of charge, but for those who want that extra hand, or who don't trust that they'll be able to configure their wine install to meet their situation, then CrossOver is a nice compromise.

https://www.codeweavers.com/store2/?dealcode=weaveme

For $59.95 USD, CrossOver will give you an automated installer for many applications, as well as integration into the package manager for dependencies that the compatibility layer might need -- such as codecs, mp3 and mpeg libraries, or specific fonts.

https://www.codeweavers.com/store2/?dealcode=weaveme

The buyer can also opt to buy phone support direct from CrossOver in order to get their applications working on their systems. That's not the only thing though, every purchase of CrossOver goes directly to the continuing development of the Wine project as CrossOver employs many of the contributors and developers, as well as contributing every fix they develop, "no matter how tiny", directly back to the Wine project itself. By supporting CrossOver, users support Wine.

https://www.codeweavers.com/store2/?dealcode=weaveme

For me personally, the biggest and most helpful feature is the integration with the package manager. All of my main applications -- MS Office, World Of Warcraft, Warcraft 3, and others all work fine in the base version of Wine. But anytime I swap a new distro to try out I always have to go back through and install all of the system dependencies, such as (32bit versions of) gstreamer codecs, libmpg, mp3 support, and others. But with CrossOver I get prompted to install those packages the moment I try to install a Windows application that has those dependencies declared.

https://www.codeweavers.com/store2/?dealcode=weaveme

For advanced users, purchasing CrossOver may not have a direct benefit. But for those who are less technologically minded, or that want to help out the Wine project, then purchasing CrossOver is an easy way to support themselves, as well as support the wider community who benefits from the Wine project.

https://www.codeweavers.com/store2/?dealcode=weaveme

CrossOver has managed to work fairly well over the years, even going back to CrossOver Office 5 from 10+ years ago as well as CrossOver Games, which has since been integrated into CrossOver itself.

Running Windows Applications On A Mac Without Windows CrossOver 14.1.3 Review

Running Windows applications on Linux and Mac systems has come a long way. I remember doing virtual machines, like QEMU, and VirtualBox, running a guest in Vista or XP, and while it does run as expected, the overhead costs of running a whole operating system in a VM environment can be big (I still do use these programs, particularly VBox for development purposes).

Around 2004-2007ish, I’ve was doing some application testings for a little program named WINE (I also have a friend, Tom Wickline, of Wine Reviews, who incidentally was the indirect reason why I created this blog in the first place (we did a review of PlayOnLinux in the past together, and it was so much fun, that I created this blog out of a whim). No, WINE is not a alcoholic drink, but instead it is rather a program that emulates different Windows APIs in linux and mac systems. It was also a challenge to compile for beginners too (I do not compile in mainstream linux OSes in the past but rather in smaller hobbyist type Linuxes like Alinux/PeanutLinux or PCLinuxOS). Real life happened though, so I had to give up this hobby.

The advantage of running WINE over Virtual Machine solutions is no overhead costs and the application runs at particularly native speeds. The disadvantage of running WINE is that not all programs run (Windows has a lot of APIs under the hood, and WINE doesn’t implement all of them).

In this particular article, I am running CrossOver 14.1.3 for Mac, on an early 2011 MacBook Pro (8,1) with 4GB of RAM and Intel HD 3000 Graphics (384MB Shared Memory Display).

Also for this particular experiment, I am installing a CodeWeavers supported application (Microsoft Office 2007), and two unsupported, but community supported applications (Mass Effect, and Tomb Raider 2013)

Before We Start
Before we start, let us see the levels of compatibility in these programs according to WINE compatibility levels:

Bronze – programs can install and run, with fundamental functionalities intact. However, the applications running have enough bugs that CodeWeavers advises running them with caution (save early and often).

Silver – programs can install and run well enough to be usable. There are however bugs that are found to let the program run flawlessly.

Gold – programs can install and run as you would expect if you are running Windows.

A further level of support for CodeWeavers is officially supported. That means if your application is in the list of officially supported applications, CodeWeavers is dedicated to bring up the level of compatibility higher (for example, supported bronze applications is expected to be brought up to silver level applications of CodeWeaver in future versions of CrossOver).

Microsoft Office (Officially Supported, Bronze)
Microsoft Office is an Office Suite of Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Presentation Software, among others. It is basically the proprietary equivalent of LibreOffice/OpenOffice. As such, CrossOver supports Microsoft Office officially.

CODEWEAVERS LAUNCHES CROSSOVER 14

Update includes support for new “Yosemite” Mac Operating System
Runs Quicken 2015, many newer games; Includes latest, greatest Wine 1.7.25

SAINT PAUL, Minn (October 16, 2014) — CodeWeavers, Inc., developer of CrossOver—the easiest, fastest way to run Windows software on Mac and Linux, announced today the release of CrossOver 14. With CrossOver 14, you can run thousands of Windows software titles, without the need to buy a Windows OS license.

CrossOver 14 features support for Apple’s latest operating system release of Mac OS 10.10, more commonly known as “Yosemite,” which was released on 16 October, 2014. CrossOver 14 works “out-of-the-box” with Yosemite, and will give Mac users all the benefits from this much anticipated OS release.
CrossOver 14 contains support for many newer Windows applications, a prominent example being Quicken 2015. CrossOver also supports many games, including new support for the very popular Hearthstone (on Linux), as well as other titles such as Cube World, Path of Exile, Warcraft III, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Terraria, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and Xenonauts. CrossOver also runs thousands of other Windows titles of all types.

CrossOver 14 also includes the very latest release of Wine: Wine 1.7.25. Wine is an open-source software allowing Windows programs to be run on Unix-based operating systems without the need for Windows itself. Wine also delivers superior performance and simplicity compared with virtual machine. The latest release, Wine 1.7.25, embodies another year’s worth of Wine development, including nearly 5,000 new patches and application improvements to hundreds of different Windows applications.
CrossOver 14 is available immediately at www.CodeWeavers.com.

Run Windows apps on both OS X & Linux with CrossOver 12.5

Don't want to dual-boot your Mac or Linux PC to run one or two Windows apps? Don't want to install a full virtual operating system for them? CodeWeaver's latest version of CrossOver 12.5 may be just what you want.

Most Mac and Linux users think anything Windows can do their operating systems can do better. Often, they're right, but then there comes that day when they really need to run that one special Windows application and then they're stuck.

Run Windows programs from your Linux desktop or Mac? With CrossOver, it's easy. There are many ways of handling this. Some people keep old Windows PC around; others dual boot their computers; and quite a few run virtual machines (VM)s of Windows on their Linux PCs and Macs. That's all fine, but it's also a fair amount of trouble.

Then, there's CodeWeaver's approach: Use a program, CrossOver, which enables you to install and run the one or two Windows applications you need on your favorite operating system. CrossOver is based on the open-source project Wine, an implementation of the Windows application programming interface (API) on top of the Unix/Linux operating system family. For each application, CrossOver/Wine creates a small Windows virtual machine just for that program.

You actually don't need CrossOver to run Windows applications on Linux or a Mac. You can do it with Wine alone -- if you know precisely what you're doing. What CrossOver gives you is easy, automated installation of Windows applications, and technical support. And in this latest version, the CrossOver interface has been improved so it's easier than ever to install and manage Windows applications.

The latest version -- CrossOver 12.5, which is based on Wine 1.6 -- supports  thousands of Windows programs. These include: Quicken, Adobe Photoshop, various versions of the Microsoft Office suite; and, of course lots and lots of games. On the fun side of computing, CrossOver supports Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and thousands of others.

Not all programs run equally well. Before you invest in buying CrossOver, which runs $59.95, you'll want to take CodeWeavers up on its offer of a free two-week trial to make sure that your particular must-have program will run right with it.

In particular, this latest version offers better support for Microsoft Outlook, Quicken, Internet Explorer 7, and improved compatibility with the Microsoft Office suite. The company has also fixed several crashes and made numerous usability improvements.

This edition also offers a real improvement in its interoperability with Mac OS X. CrossOver 12.5, which will run with Snow Leopard or later, now has the"Mac Driver" technology enabled by default for all applications. The company claims that this brings improved integration with the OS X desktop environment and improves functions such as drag-and-drop, command-tab switching, Dock and Menu Bar integration, and window transparency. In my limited testing with my Mountain Lion-powered Mac Mini, Mac Driver lived up to these claims.

On Linux, CrossOver boasts a new user interface. This makes it much easier to launch your installed Windows applications. I also found it easier in general to install Windows apps on Linux with CrossOver 12.5. CrossOver isn't perfect. Many Windows applications won't run properly with it. But, many will work with it, and if you only need a couple of Windows apps to make your Linux or Mac computing life complete then CrossOver may well be exactly what you need.

Give it a try and find out for yourself. It won't cost you a thing.

CodeWeavers CrossOver 12.2.0 has been released for Linux and Mac

Here is the release announcement from Josh Dubois...

Hello all,

I am pleased to announce the release of CodeWeavers CrossOver 12.2.0 for both Mac OS X and Linux.  We have made many substantial improvements to CrossOver since our last release.

In this release, as in our last one, we have made Quicken more stable and usable.  We have made improvements to some games running in full-screen mode, including Wizard 101.  We have improved the stability of Office 2007, and fixed a bug with running applications that rely on the .Net 4.0 Framework.  For Chinese-language speakers, we have fixed a bug which caused Traditional Chinese to be used even when a user's preferences were set to Simplified Chinese.

On the Mac OS, we have continued to improve our new Mac Driver technology. This release includes support for drag and drop in the Mac Driver, as well as changes which should improve the visual experience and reduce window flicker.  The Mac Driver is maturing rapidly and will be the default option in our next major release. All experienced CrossOver users are invited to turn it on and see how it works.

With the recent release of Ubuntu 13.04, we experienced another bug which caused CrossOver to fail to register itself.  This release fixes that, and is back-dated so any user who had support when 13.04 was released a few days ago will be able to download and install CrossOver 12.2.0.

Lastly, for any interested games, the Dungeons and Dragons Neverwinter beta started today and it is running in CrossOver 12.2.0.

As always, if you are an existing customer with an active support entitlement, you can download our latest version from <http://www.codeweavers.com> and use it.  Mac customers who have automatic updates enabled and who are entitled to this update will receive it automatically.

If CrossOver 12.2 asks you for registration credentials, use the same email and password which you used to purchase CrossOver from <http://www.codeweavers.com>.  If you have any trouble, email info@codeweavers.com for help.

A complete changelog for CrossOver 12.2 is included below.

Thank you all for your support, and we hope you enjoy CrossOver 12.2!
